writing: public tranportation or roads
Should governments spend money on improving roads and highways, or should government spend more money on improving public tranportation( buses, trains, subways)? Why ? Use specific reasons and details to support to develop your essay.
Recently, some people assert that government should spend money on the building new roads and highways to relieve the traffic pressure, while others believe that the money should be spend in the public transportation. After considering the advantages and disadvantages of both choices, I would recommend the government to choose the later one, because it's more continuously beneficial and environment-friendly.
For starters, improving the public transportation is a foresighted solution to address the current traffic problems. According to statistics released by Chinese
Social Science Academy, the number of new built roads and highways has increased 5.2 percent last year, and the number of the new automobiles has raised almost 10 percent. The statistics indicate that the more investment spent in building roads, the more cars will be purchased, which will deteriorate the traffic situation. However, if the government spends more money in public transportation, the situation will be changed. More and more people are encouraged to take public transportations rather than driving their own vehicles. The number of running cars on the road will decrease and people will eventually find it takes less time to their work place than before. When they get used to it, they will find taking a bus or train is better than driving their cars and the appalling traffic situation will gradually be meliorated.
Equal to relieve the traffic condition is that improving public transportation is also a more environment-friendly. The main energy resources of automobiles are fossil fuels. And burning of these resources will release a wide variety of harmful chemicals, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The increase amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will increase the ability of the air to keep the Sun's heat, which eventually causes the Green House Effect. And the rise proportion of nitrogen oxides in the air will cause the acid rain. Both of them are harmful and perhaps disastrous to us and our planet. If the government spend more money in improving public transportation, the fewer cars will run and the fewer harmful chemicals will be released, and the better place we will have.
