Many sources could provide knowledge for people. Considering the two major sources, experience and books. They both inform us with a lot of information yet the knowledge they offer are characterized by quite different features.

Knowledge gained from experience is more inclusive than one we get from books. As we define the knowledge as our understanding about the world, it is quite superficial to believe that all the things can be learned from books. Moreover we depend more on practice than theory in learning in some cases, like riding a bike, or swimming. A lot people learn how to swim without books, and the way they master the skill attributes to experience: keep floating in the water, and try to move forward. Experience can bring different kinds of knowledge that books can not.
Books are set for teaching in classrooms, so they are characterized by precise definition, detailed deduction, and accurate conclusion. However, when applied to practical use, few people would simply follow the instructions on books. Quite different situations emerge. As we know books tend to give us conclusions based on many assumptions, but not all these assumptions are qualified in real environment, so approximations must be applied, which thanks to experience, we know how to optimize factors in our project to achieve the best result. It is the experience we get from practice that help us settle problems.
Perhaps another thing the knowledge of experience differentiates from that of books is that people are actively involved in the learning in the former than the latter. Many examples illustrate that. When we have chemistry lessons, we always take part in different experiments. Through mixing the substance we can observe the phenomenon it generates and understand it more clearly, while in reading books, we are passively involved with formula and element period table, which can not bring us interests.
In conclusion, I tend to prefer knowledge learned from experience than the one learned from book, because the experience could bring much wider aspects of knowledge, relatively practical solutions to problems, and an active learning process.
