求一个句子的解释。

Actually, i expected the population to be a lot lower today, it typically runs between 50 and 60 percent on the day the research paper is due.

这个句子应该怎么理解，我怎么觉得前后好像没什么关系啊。

大概的意思应该是
“事实上，我希望现在的人口能够减少。减少到现在调查的人口数量的50%~60%比较合适”
