Is the beginner more likely to make important discoveries in any field of inquiry, as the speaker contends, rather than expert? Although I agree that beginner is likely to shake off the shackles of tradition, and possesses rich imagination, however, in most cases it is not sufficient to draw the conclusion that beginner is more likely to make important discoveries. In the field of inquiry, both innovation and discovery call for a balance in which there are both beginner and expert.
Imagination is more important than Knowledge, as Einstein once said. On the one hand, this remark emphasized the importance of imagination in academic research. With this power, beginner is able to surpass predecessors in a surprising but impressive way. This can be confirmed by De Broglie, the Nobel laureate, as a new comer of area of physics which leaded by great scholars like Einstein at that time, developed his theory of electron waves with bold speculation and creative imagination, by which laid a master status in modern physics. However, on the other hand, it is not always the case. That statement is certainly true to Einstein because he's got more than enough knowledge in his field and his creativity spurred from his imagination. Thus, Knowledge must be the fundamental of creativity, while imagination plug it wings.
Expert, with rich knowledge and experience, is skillful in comprehensive results of predecessors and insightful enough to make fewer detours. With understand and comprehend of successful work of others, expert is able to learn what contributions remain to be made. Thus it is easier to find out the right direction. On the contrary, beginner will spend more time on trial-and-fail to find the right direction and the correct method to achieve the goal. So a better way to make significant discoveries is to combine the imagination of beginner and the wisdom of expert. Thus, imagination supported by knowledge can fly higher, knowledge inspired by imagination will be more powerful.
Finally, without beginner, we will lose revitalization of our development. Without expert, our research will lose a powerful guide and we will be likely to make mistakes that have been made hundreds times before. Thus, while the speaker emphasize the importance of beginner, the leading and guiding contributions of expert cannot just be overlooks, in fact, expert is equally important, or in some extent, more cardinal.
