The lecture reexamines the hypothesis about altruism mentioned in the passage by closely observing the behavior of the meerkat. The motivation of altruistic behavior that figure out in the lecture is quite different from the theory.

First, researchers found that the meerkat who acts as a guard has already eaten enough food. That is to say, before the meerkat looking out for predators, this sentinel one has enjoyed a wonderful meal prior to others and it completes his task with a full stomach. Such phenomenon weakens the argument in the passage that the one performing altruistic acts gain little reward.

Second, researchers also found that “the altruistic meerkat” has the maximum opportunity to escape. When scouting about the predator, it always standing near the burrow and is the first one to notice danger, that is, it can flee at once, while the other meerkats are on the edge of great danger. This part is also on the contrary to the view in the passage that the guard places itself in grave danger.

Third, the alarm made by standing guard may be regarded as the signals that attract the predator’s attention. The “altruistic” meerkat often shout something like together or run immediately, so such order would definitely result in the group behavior which more likely to be seen by the hawk. So the danger of the guard is relatively reduced. This explanation again makes the opinion in the passage pale that the guarding meerkat would flee alone and face a higher risk to predator.

Finally, the lecture also refers to one point about human altruism. If the donor provides something to a stranger, although s/he may not be repaid, the sense of moral would be satisfied. Since, to some person, the non-material reward, such as dignity and prestige, is more significant than material ones.

All in all, the perspectives in the lecture show a positive side of altruism which totally on the opposite of the opinion in the passage. It may not true that the altruistic behavior ensures the survival of a group.

第二篇
In the listening material, the professor gives us two examples which totally disapproved the opinion in the reading passage. We know from reading that both human and animals are intended to behave altruism, while the listening material mentions other motivations which seem like selfish.

Altruistic behavior in human is an example in the reading passage, many people are willing to help others from providing food to donate body organs among relatives even strangers. While they do a great help to others, but they themselves just have a little reward or even harm.
Nevertheless, in the listening lecture, the professor views it with a different eye. She points out people have some selfish motivation to do this. One may obtain some rewards from the person s/he helped both material and mental, such as public praise and prestige. What’s more, one would realize the self-worth during do favor to others.

The meerkat is another example of altruistic behavior in animal. From the perspective in the reading passage, the meerkat seems sacrifice himself in order to save others. An individual serves as a sentinel while others finding and enjoying delicious food. He must be alarm others as soon as there coming a predator. This behavior makes other escape from the danger of being eaten, however increase the risk of he himself by reason that he hardly has time to run away. The lecture is just on the opposite ground. She points out the meerkat being a sentinel has already a full stomach. Also, the place he standing out is near his burrow which provides convenience to flee away. In addition, when he alarming others they will together or appears in a pucker which is more attractive to the predator. That is to say, Altruism has some motivation which different from it looks like.
