Should business do anything they can make a profit? It seems that making profits and earn as much money as possible is the destiny of a businessman. Even some acclaim that it is acceptable for a businessman to make profits by whatever means within the legal permission. Consider this word deeply, however, I find some flaws and unsubstantiated points made in it. To begin with, although the profit is the ultimate goal for a businessman pursuing, the social responsibility is unavoidable and crucial as well. A businessman, especially a successful businessman, possesses a large amount of social wealth in a common sense. And thus the society endows the responsibility of making more social wealth to the average people at large. The greater power possessed, the greater responsibility obtained. The businessmen should take the burden of constructing our country with no doubt. Furthermore, just obeying the laws is not enough for a businessman to fulfill the social responsibility and business ethics. For example, in business activities some taxes could be evaded by smart tricks under law permission. This is legal but not ethical. Tax is the main income for government constructing the country, and tax evasion could be viewed as hazardous to the development of the country. As an ethical businessman, paying the tax is not only an enforced duty according to the laws but also the inner will with strong desire. On balance, we could not deny the essential of a merchant is earning more money to enlarge the scale of the business. In another words, the amount of profit a businessman can make reflects the success in his or her career. From this prospective making profit should be encouraged greatly. To sum up, I strongly disagree that a merchant should pursue the profits by any means. Social responsibility and business ethics are as important as profit.
