People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

After the graduation from high school, many people enter the work force directly. Most students who have the same opportunities, however, decided to go to college to further their studies. They attend college to gain more knowledge, to make more friends and to better prepare themselves for the fierce competition in job market.

First and foremost, college is a place where people pursue the truth. There are many excellent teachers in college, and the courses cover almost all the domains in science and technology. Regular experiments and discussions help students to practice and share the knowlege that they acquire from books and classes. Besides, the free academic atmosphere in college usually encourages students to ponder and doubt what they learn. All these factors are of great importance for college students to build and consolidate their own knowledge system.

Moreover, friends are the most precious fortune for one’s life, and a 4-year college study can be the golden time for people to make good friends. In college, numerous activities are held all the year round such as sports games, expositions and all kinds of forums. During these activities, different people with similar interests gather together and get acquainted with each other. It is not hard to imagine that some of them become friends and even intimate partners in their future life. Many years after, people will miss the days and nights in college and remember all the fun they had with their friends.

Last but not least, students can prepare themselves for their professional careers during college time. College students can learn a second foreign language or take part in a double-diplomas program. They can also join students union or many other associations to make themselves more cooperative and organized. In addition, part-time jobs and internships are readily available for those who desire more attractive resumes. In brief, college provide a variety of means for students to become more competitve in the job market.
