SAT Essay ____16____07/04/08

Prompt 16

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

It is easy to make judgments about people and their actions when we do not know anything about their circumstances or what motivated them to take those actions. But we should look beyond a person's actions. When people do things that we consider outrageous, inconsiderate, or harmful, we should try to understand why they acted as they did.

Assignment: Is it important to try to understand people's motivations before judging their actions? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

My Essay:

Everybody had experiences of doing bad things with good intentions. We knew we didn't mean doing any harm. But it is almost impossible to win others understanding after the "disaster" we caused. We don't want to be misunderstood, neither do others. So we should try to understand people's motivations before judging their actions.
A lot of beaches have signs to tell people not to save the turtles from their predators. When people come to the beaches for vacation, they often help save turtles from their predators such as eagles. But turtles they save usually are the turtles sent for observation. If the observation turtle is saved, the turtle group will appear in the sight of their predators when they come back. If we don't know anything about turtles, only judge people with the results. We might say those people who saved the turtle harbor evil designs with the turtle. But after understanding their motivations, at least we know that they have good intention.
I have a smaller brother. He is very mischievous. One day afternoon he watched a TV show about butterflies. He was sorry about how painful the butterflies are when they get out from their cocoon. "It must hurt a lot" said my brother with melancholy in his eyes. When I got in his room the next day, I found a lot of opened cocoon on the floor. The butterflies in it died because they were not mature yet. I was very angry. I found him immediately and asked him why he killed all these animals. "I didn't know" he said sadly"I thought it might be painful getting out of that cocoon, so I tried to help them out." My anger disappeared. He was just trying to help the butterflies. I judged him before I knew his motivation.
It is always important to find out others motivations before judging them. I believe nobody wants to cause big problems. We should try to understand what people were thinking when they caused the problem and try to understand them. If we can always do this, there won't be any more problems in the world.
