5.11 alternative fule A-21

Since we've been discussing alternative fuels lately,  [news:/s/00:07.4-00:11.2] "xsPU,L
I wanted to pass on to you some information I read about a new fuel that's been in the news a lot lately. *U;y k(K9Co3@:`:q,D{
[news:/s/00:11.2-00:16.9] EEI!Py+J}#O
It's called A-21. [)Y+E#@@sB i
It's composed of water and a chemical known as naphtha. [news:/s/00:19.3-00:22.7]
0lo;?BF#U It seems to be a very promising fuel  [news:/s/00:22.7-00:24.9]
xc,k}Sln/e7U/fF0eX because it's much cleaner than the gasoline that we use today. [news:/s/00:24.9-00:28.1]
D1ML(d B That's not to say that it doesn't pollute, but it is cleaner. [news:/s/00:28.1-00:32.3] 1~;kwm|4F}
A-21 isn't like some other alternative fuels that require completely new types of engines. [news:/s/00:32.3-00:38.0]
6|'O*w z.d/A A-21 still works in regular, everyday combustion engines  [news:/s/00:38.0-00:42.4]
e:R5j%R Er#tE --- like the ones in cars n,V n-`2Ocen3]
--- with only minor mechanical modifications. [news:/s/00:42.4-00:46.6]
3K'[$i.q~w So changing over wouldn't be a big deal.
#]:s:l]+R [V-F kQ You may doubt some of these claims as many researchers have [news:/s/00:49.0-00:52.6] hf Gy bO)x:GD8B"AY
Some people feared that because it contains about 45 percent water it would freeze in the winter.
yJ*C}!W.h/C [news:/s/00:52.6-00:58.4] #w&n!b,CH*vF~
But a small amount of antifreeze was added to it, and that seems to have solved the problem.  [news:/s/00:58.4-01:03.3]
Qy q1U#Xc(K} A-21 has recently undergone street tests in buses in Reno, Nevada. [news:/s/01:03.3-01:08.3] ;Z"j9J j-k W6L&l
So far it seems to work just fine. [news:/s/01:08.3-01:10.6]  This is a good thing, especially in Nevada, [news:/s/01:10.6-01:12.5]  7u$q-vt1k-YPa
because the state government there has passed a law requiring that a large percentage of vehicles in Nevada run on alternative fuels. [news:/s/01:12.5-01:20.0]
)@qD\ZB:} M4SG A-21 should help.  [news:/s/01:20.0-01:21.8]

5.11 gas hydrate
IC/D fj'e"b m{*I about science#D-nV^:\1p)oBJ(k
scientists are always on the lookout for the alternative source of energy. [news:/s/00:09.4-00:14.0]
.aP6OC#RII today we were going to discuss one that's so plentful, they say it could supply more energy than all the coal and oil in the world. [news:/s/00:14.0-00:22.1] }V:F#Ky?}/M
it's found in something called gas hydrate [news:/s/00:22.1-00:24.8] .and believe it or not ,that's a kind of ice. [news:/s/00:24.8-00:27.9]
5bV4U+|tD that's right.but the water in this ice was way down below the earch surface when it was frozen O-Ga\yn/i
  [news:/s/00:27.9-00:33.8] e.XE5DQt.S
so it was under a lot of pressure [news:/s/00:33.8-00:36.4] ,
`(s;}7~6m and traped inside the crystals of ice are individual molecules of methane  [news:/s/00:36.4-00:41.6] news:/s/[kN6Q.qH
5BjZ9w)l4}
that's what's in natural gas. [news:/s/00:41.6-00:43.7]
+A:q7dU$|i all these make gas hydrate pretty strange stuff. [news:/s/00:43.7-00:47.3]
1dI2[ Fd,C if u touch a match to a piece of this ice, it ? burst in the flame. [news:/s/00:47.3-00:51.7] #Y]"BR!X4|Q(O5_gk
and when geologist bring a truck of it up to the surface to study at normal air pre and temp. (v:oT Y1QT P
[news:/s/00:51.7-00:57.9] #UGk&C)b4[%LX0ZDrg
gas hydry begin to hiss in bubble [news:/s/00:57.9-01:00.5] ,&Q0Zq&@_}P0|auV L
and in less than half an hour, the ice melts and methane inside escape into the air. [news:/s/01:00.5-01:06.3] &bBARBaY j
now as you might guess, this can make gas hydrate kind of hard for miners to handle. [news:/s/01:06.3-01:12.3] `7]'oj`V)y9V4QA6K F
and the there's the problem of where it located, *th#I _w a-S
in frozen arctic regions or in ocean waters off the atlantic coast [news:/s/01:15.3-01:19.8] ,and up to a mile down,.
hc;l n9F,R5Z environmentalists warn that mining could even be disastrous [news:/s/01:22.1-01:25.9] ,K:i*{+F'D8aG
offshore driffing could allow  sea water to seep down into the huge ice deposits  [news:/s/01:25.9-01:34.6] and release tons of methane up into air atmosphere.
_6{A$Y c!A and methane ,our listener may recall ,is a green hourse gas [news:/s/01:34.6-01:39.3] ,
0J)eBq6E/VL+vh!q"e it can really worsen the problem of gloabl warmming  [news:/s/01:39.3-01:42.1] news:/s/.
OI)n lK so gas hydrate may offer some interesting possiblities, [news:/s/01:42.1-01:46.5] $j N~Q c E;A7@r+c*W
but with all these drawbacks i am not going to hold my breath waiting for it to  fule my furnace.

as you all know, Dor Nelson's assignment is for each of us to find a liitle scientific puzzle to reseach and solve.
0s7A5a#y3jjz [news:/s/00:05.5-00:13.7]
H!?-]#L2i#d|5E8P1f6V well, mine was ,why donot spiders get stuck in their own webs? [news:/s/00:13.7-00:19.1] z rL'C;M5n4E
pretty good question if u ask me [news:/s/00:19.1-00:21.7] ``Ra/o6AEM
someone even read a thesis on it i'm sure. [news:/s/00:21.7-00:24.6] u)f|z4^X.j6s g
there are actually several answer depending on the spider. [news:/s/00:24.6-00:28.2] 2Z*uZ5U;R%G
let's star with one common type of spider. [news:/s/00:28.2-00:31.4]
Q0m-awK)Y {A this spider usualy stay in the middle of their webs,  [news:/s/00:31.4-00:34.9] ,x"|p6|0V.y,yg
and donot put any glue like material there. [news:/s/00:34.7-00:37.8]
Dc0LE.F,{ they do leave a thin strand of sticky material on the outer parts of the web. [news:/s/00:37.8-00:42.6]
%A9x^0B:|T z O0jK this material is made of compouds that draw water molecules  out of the air  [news:/s/00:42.6-00:48.0] zwq R{ Mzg#J
if it draws enough water it dose what water normally does  [news:/s/00:48.0-00:53.6] 5SCD:rA2bD
it forms little drop  [news:/s/00:51.6-00:53.6]
:e)y/i9g)K$Ws^ the result is  sticky little globs ,little balls of glue like material. [news:/s/00:53.6-00:58.7] %?#G.]-e6n
when a spider steps into one of these little globs by accident as it sometime does. [news:/s/00:58.7-01:03.8]
l(u,E)pqcZ"[ it's if human being step on a piece of chewing gun  [news:/s/01:03.8-01:07.4]
Dg$}N!k u/f+T it just inconvients   [news:/s/01:07.4-01:09.4]
uy}3~&yA @)ZBN(q4A;b o[1e*Zs
but when a fly flies into the spider's web, it hits about 50 of globs enough to make sticky tightly to the web
6n!I(Wo {'c-~:b,x [news:/s/01:09.2-01:18.0]
,V?,YpVJ _/sY q9_k what's more,  because the sticky material is in the glob instead of in the uniform coat, the spider uses less of it. By doing this, the spider saves energy and that means it has to catch fewer flies.
{+Z+d4[!]9l)Xz qX @ PGge
It is not of economy really. The spiders do what is easiest for spiders
