经典“建设”题——build a university in your community

[font=宋体]The building of a new university is exciting in any city. Like many other huge projects, however, it has both positive and negative effects on the community where the university locates[/font][font=Times New Roman] [/font][font=宋体]. As far as I am concerned, I hold the opinion that the advantages of building a new university outweigh the disadvantages, which I will argue in detail in the following passage.[/font][font=Times New Roman]

[font=宋体]The foremost reason to support the plan is that a university in my community may provide local people with more chances to pursue advanced education. Just as an old saying goes, "Knowledge is power." The basic prerequisite of success for any person is the education. As one of the most important forms of knowledge factories, a university can pass on tremendous power--advanced knowledge to us. With such power, we are able to not only live a better life on ourselves, but also make contributions to the society. For instance, one can learn information technology in our newly built university. With such practical skill, he or she can hunt a job after graduation more easily and contribute more to the modernization of our community than those who with lower education.[/font][font=Times New Roman]

[font=宋体]Another subtle consideration rests on the fact that much more job opportunities will be offered by the building of a new university. It is so large a project that a great number of labors such as builders, carpenters, and transporters need to be employed. Furthermore, even after the establishment, considerable of teachers, managers, and logistic staff are still in continuous need. In either case, the majority of the employees are, needless to say, drawn from local labor market, and, consequently, the number of people out of work in our community will definitely goes down.[/font][font=Times New Roman]

[font=宋体]In addition to the increasing number of employment opportunities, establishment of a university is likely to advance the economic prosperity of our community. It is impossible to isolate the development of a university from its surroundings. More or less, it will depend on materials and services supplied by other industries and thus in turn encourage the development of various other businesses--restaurants, hotels, book stores, and laundries, to list just a few.[/font][font=Times New Roman]
[font=宋体][/font][/font]
[font=宋体][/font]
[font=宋体]I have to admit, however, that building a new university will inevitably lead to a few negative effects in local area. One can imagine that the traffic problem will come first. It is not rare for parents who send children to school or students who drive to school to run into horrible traffic jam in rush hours. Besides, young people in the university who might sometimes cause troubles such as drinking, speeding or even fighting could probably destroy the quite atmosphere of the community.[/font][font=Times New Roman]
[font=宋体][/font][/font]
[font=宋体]Nevertheless, these problems would be eliminated someday should we take effective methods like improving the road systems and setting strict laws and regulations.[/font][font=Times New Roman]
[font=宋体][/font][/font]
[font=宋体][/font]
[font=宋体][size=10.5pt]Taking into account all the factors mentioned above, it is easy for us to come into the conclusion that the benefits brought by a new university exceed the potential risks and therefore I am in favor of the plan to build a new university in our community.[/size][/font]
