Teachers are usually considered the most essential career in terms of development of a nation. Some people consider that teachers should be paid for how their students behave in the exam. The idea is strongly opposed by people who held the idea that students’ scores is not the exclusive criterion to measure teachers’ ability and how much students learn don not only lie on their teachers. From my perspective, I totally agree with the latter idea.

No issue is more crucial than the reason that subject teaching, science research and public service are the main 3 essential work teachers should be engaged in. Subject teaching is one of them and of equivalent importance to the rest. Development of a country does not only rely on basic education for students, but also, to some degree, more depend on the advancement of sophisticated technology which can soon be utilized into manufacture. Say, discovery of X-ray by Roentgen, has revolutionized examination technique of patients, precisely locating where human tissues are transformed in genes. And Roentgen, though a famous scientist, is a teacher in college.

To such a paramount reason, another must be added. How much students learn is not only dependent on their teachers’ teaching ability, but on a large scale on their diligence and intelligence. A story tells a naughty boy who plays computer games all day don not study at all, consequently obtains a low mark. Could we say that his teacher should be blamed for this low score? Though his teacher has made his or her most effort to teach the child, it is next to impossible for the boy to do well in the exam due to a lack of diligence. Thus, teachers’ role in education is indubitably subsidiary to students’ endeavor, which is of dominance to their development in the future.

However, it is the only way to measure teachers’ work by their work loads. This might induce that teachers only focus their work on teaching hours. Teachers may assign too much homework which cannot be completed in 2 hours or continue to give classes out of the schedule.
Certainly, this makes for teachers to receive bonus, but inevitably, do much harm to the students.
Though it is difficult to measure teachers’ work, it is absolutely a bad avenue to consider their jobs only limited to how much their students have learnt. People may be still unconvinced, the reasons I have analyzed could at least make them more aware of the various dimensions of the issues under discussion. In fact, it is better to cancel rules that teachers’ salary most depend on their students’ behavior, which is fairly unfair.
